No importa quién seas, no importa de dónde vengas; esto es San Francisco y te estamos esperando con los brazos abiertos. Más o menos ese es el mensaje que todo joven norteamericano recibía en el año 1967 desde la ciudad del Golden Gate y ese es el mensaje de esta canción, compuesta por Sam Andrew, guitarrista y cantante de la Big Brother Holding Company.
Con la poderosa voz de Janis Joplin primero en un papel secundario y luego como pieza clave de la banda, la Big Brother se hizo un hueco entre los grupos a tener en cuenta en aquella explosión de amor y rock que tuvo lugar en la costa Oeste de Estados Unidos. Sin duda, los mejores momentos en la carrera de la ya mítica cantante fueron junto a esta banda, cuando todo era pura improvisación y libertad en el escenario. Ahí es cuando Janis daba su 100 por 100. Es impresionante ver cómo puede adueñarse desde los coros en un tema en el que ella no es la voz principal.
Este “Combination of the Two” abre el que fue el segundo LP de la banda y por el cual se ganarían siempre un lugar en la historia del rock, el “Cheap Thrills” de 1968.
