A finales de los 70, y sobre los escombros de la agonizante escena punk de ambos lados del Atlántico, comenzó a surgir un nuevo movimiento que unía el sentimiento de urgencia juvenil de sus predecesores con el interés por la comercialidad y la imagen heredados del mejor pop de diseño. Este movimiento fue bautizado como new wave, y sus paladines fueron bandas como The Police, Pretenders, Talking Heads, Blondie…
Procedentes de la apacible Boston, The Cars nunca gozaron en Europa del predicamento de los anteriores, aunque en Estados Unidos fueron realmente grandes, vendiendo millones de discos y haciendo tours multitudinarios. ‘Heartbeat City‘, del LP de igual título publicado en 1984 por Warner, atesora una de las intros de teclados más referenciales de toda la década.
